Frugal Tip- Travel Box

Photobucket

As a family, we love to take impromptu roadtrips and there are times when we will stay out later then we had planned or prepared for. During these times something usually comes up and we will have to make the choice to stop and buy something or go home. After spending more money than needed on some items (such as buying sunscreen when we have 4 bottles at home or going home because playing in the lake made the kids' clothing soaked), I made a list of the things that have come up the most and put together a box to keep in the van so that we could pull from it as needed. It is still a work in progress, but has saved us more than once.

In this box:

2 old towels
1 roll paper towels
1 roll toilet paper
3-4 plastic bags
1 bag baby wipes
4 toothbrushes (samples)
4 toothpastes (samples)
1 small body wash
1 small lotion
2 pads
1 chapstick
1 deodorant (sample)
1 change of clothes for each kid
1 hat for each kid
2 coloring books
1 dominoes set
2 happy meal toys

We also keep one case of bottled water in the car to use when we're out. I also plan to add 1 box of colored pencils (and a manual sharpener), 1 box of flash cards 1 box of granola bars, and 1 box of fruit snacks to our travel box.

Think about what you stop the most for or what is costing you each time you go out. There may be some things that you could keep on hand to stop the extra spending or prepare for an emergency. All the free samples that are available are perfect for this use because you don't usually need a lot of soap or toothpaste to get by in an emergency situation, but having a little on hand can be a lifesaver.

Do you keep a travel box? What is in it?
