Troop Tuesday: Fun with Science

I mentioned how much fun my son had with Kitchen Science, so it was only fitting to do similar experiments with the Girl Scout troop for their Science patch!

We had many stations (probably too many considering we only had 3 adults helping) and they were able to rotate from table to table.

For the Density Rainbow they added different liquids together (for this dish soap, body wash, oil, and water with food coloring). Each time they did it, the ingredients settled in the same order.

They cleaned pennies with 1/4 cup vinegar + 1 tsp of salt. Rinse after shaking in the mixture so they don't turn green.

They also got to:

Make Gak
Make Oobleck
Make Play-dough,
Fill a balloon using baking soda and vinegar.

Messy fun was had by all :D

Fun Sunday: Kitchen Science

This week's Fun Sunday is what we spents a snowy day working on: Kitchen Science!

We used the kit my son got from his Aunt for Christmas:

(You can find it here on Amazon, SMARTLAB: Extreme Secret Formula Lab
but I'm sure if you google you'd be able to find projects to do without buying a kit!)

The fun of Kitchen Science is that you test out stuff that you usually have just around the house! The kit was cool because it came with a book of instructions as well as the cool beakers and instruments. Cole was so excited that he yelled "Mom! I got SCIENCE!" when he opened it.

We picked 2 experiments to do that morning. The first was his favorite- we make glow in the dark slime! We had to have cornstarch, water, food coloring, and the glow in the dark powder from the kit.

The second experiment was to make water that smelled like bread. We used yeast, warm water, and sugar (and found that I need to replace my yeast! Yay science...)

Guess I should invest in a lab coat for future experiments :)

20 Mule Team Borax Laundry Boosting (and so much more)- Giveaway Ends 1/24

Ever since I was introduced to 20 Mule Team Borax  it has been something in stock in my laundry room. It helps boost laundry detergents and make your clothes cleaner, we even used it during Girl Scouts to may laundry soap.

But don't let that limit you, there's more to 20 Mule Team Borax!

House keeping:
1. Pour 1/4 cup in your toilet. Swish with the toilet brush and let set for 30 minutes or overnight.

2. Clean the disposal! Add 2-3 Tbs to your disposal. Let set for 15 minutes, then rinse with the disposal on. (This worked so well for our stinky sink!)

Pest Control:
1. Make an ant killer. Just mix 1 cup of sugar, 1/2 cup of water, and 1 Tbs of Borax. Place in a shallow dish for the ants to eat (Keep out of reach of children!).

2. The cure for cave crickets. We had them really bad when we moved to this house. These are the ones that look like spiders. I would be so grossed out every time I went in the basement to do laundry. Then I read to sprinkle borax on the ground because they will eat it. We haven't had an issue with them since!

Science Experiments:
1. Make plastic. Empty a glue bottle into a bowl. Fill the glue bottle with warm water and add it to the glue. In a separate bowl mix 1/2 cup of warm water with a teaspoon of borax. Slowly add it to the glue mixture and watch what happens!

2. Grow borax crystals. Boil water, and for every cup you add to a glass jar, add 3 teaspoons of borax. Tie a string to a pipe cleaner and suspend it in the jar. Leave it overnight and see what happens.

So whether you plan to get brighter laundry, banish pests, or just have fun- Borax has so many uses. Enter the giveaway below to win a box of Borax, 3 people will win!!
